In reality, the holiday of Easter is a classic example of the early Christian church changing an existing pagan ritual to suit their own purposes. The date that Easter falls on each year is ruled by a reasonably complex calculation related to the Spring Equinox.
The formula is : the 1st Sun. after the 1st full moon following the Spring
Equinox is Easter Sun. or Easter Day. This formula was set by Egyptian astronomers
in Alexandria in 235ad, and figured out using the same technique as the Jews
have historically used to work out the banquet of the Passover, which happened
at the same time as the crucifixion.
And adopting the pagan holiday of Eostre, the Egg, representing fertility and
re-birth in pagan times, was also adopted as an element of the Christian Easter
holiday and it came to represent the 'resurrection' or re-birth of Christ after
the crucifixion, Some Christians believe it's a symbol of the the stone obstructing
the Sepulchre being 'rolled' away.
It was at this time ( early 1800's ) the first chocolate Easter egg appeared in Germany and France and shortly spread to the remainder of Europe and beyond.
The first chocolate eggs were solid shortly followed by hollow eggs. By the turn of the 19th Century, the discovery of the modern chocolate making process and improved mass producing techniques meant the hollow, moulded Chocolate Easter Egg was fast turning into the Easter Present of choice in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, and by the 1960's it was well established across the world.
